Travelling from Switzerland? Then this page is for you: here you will find your travel plan from Zurich, Basel or Bern – by plane, train or car to the ferry to Ærø and on to the cottage in Søby. Simply choose your starting point.
Ærø is an island without a bridge – the last leg is always by ferry. From Switzerland there are three ways to reach one of the ferry ports:
The three ferries to Ærø are Fynshav–Søby (reservation required for cars and foot passengers), Faaborg–Søby and Svendborg–Ærøskøbing. Arriving in Søby, you are only a few minutes' walk from the cottage. Timetables and booking: Ærø ferries.
Zurich Airport has direct flights to Copenhagen (SWISS and SAS) and to Hamburg (SWISS and Eurowings).
According to SBB, several direct day trains run from Zurich HB to Hamburg every day, plus a daily night train. From Hamburg, trains run across the border at Padborg to Odense on Funen (due to engineering works, replacement buses at times – please check with DSB or DB). From Odense, take the Svendborg line to Svendborg and the ferry to Ærøskøbing, or the bus to Faaborg and the ferry directly to Søby.
Via Basel or Schaffhausen into Germany and north towards Hamburg, then on the A7 to the border at Flensburg. After the Danish border at Flensburg, the Fynshav–Søby ferry is the most direct route: it docks a few minutes' walk from the cottage. If you would like to visit Funen on the way, take the ferry from Faaborg (to Søby) or from Svendborg (to Ærøskøbing).
From EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse, easyJet flies directly to Copenhagen and to Hamburg.

From Basel straight into Germany and north towards Hamburg, on the A7 to the border at Flensburg. There are no scheduled flights from Bern Airport to Denmark or Hamburg. It is best to fly from Zurich (direct to Copenhagen or Hamburg) or from EuroAirport Basel (easyJet to Copenhagen or Hamburg). You will find the connection from Bern to the airport in the SBB timetable; the onward journey from Copenhagen or Hamburg is the same as in the travel plan from Zurich.
From Bern, you will find connections to Hamburg in the SBB timetable – depending on the train with a change, for example in Basel. From Hamburg, trains run across the border at Padborg to Odense on Funen (due to engineering works, replacement buses at times – please check with DSB or DB). From Odense, take the Svendborg line to Svendborg and the ferry to Ærøskøbing, or the bus to Faaborg and the ferry directly to Søby.
From Bern usually via Basel into Germany, then as from Basel north to the border at Flensburg. After the Danish border at Flensburg, the Fynshav–Søby ferry is the most direct route: it docks a few minutes' walk from the cottage. If you would like to visit Funen on the way, take the ferry from Faaborg (to Søby) or from Svendborg (to Ærøskøbing).
Arriving by ferry in Søby, you are almost there: Dansk Cottage is only a few minutes' walk from the harbour. Arriving in Ærøskøbing, drive across the island to Søby or take the island bus.
The island bus on Ærø is free for everyone all year round and connects Søby, Ærøskøbing and Marstal. Dogs are welcome on the bus; bicycles are carried at selected stops (no e-bikes). The bus stop is about three minutes' walk from the cottage. Timetables are available from Ærø Municipality.
